Service learning 2/18/09

Yesterday in our sercvice learning session My group did alot
of discussing our upcoming plans for save Darfur. We canceled
a continuing project due to the time length being taken up.
We created a different piece of public announcement for
our group. we had to make a change in our group before we can
help make a change in darfur.

Our short term goals include creating a power point for darfur to have a school wide
information day. in the long run we hope to have a
walk a thon in may, and public information sessions
starting sometime towards the end of the year. We hope that
over the next month we can do all we need to have concrete
plans to help those in need in Darfur.

Save Darfur

In the western region of sudan, there is a genocide going on in Darfur.
Beginning in february of 2007 the conflict has yet to be resolved.
Over in Darfur many people are loosing their lives. Many men are taken
away from their parents, woman raped and beaten, and children never receiving
an education or chance to see adulthood. My saving learning group is focused
on making a change in Darfur. We want to Plan a WAlk-a-thon to raise money for
refugee camps in darfur. We are hoping that whatever money and events we
can raise will help the lives of a few people in Darfur and raise awareness
about what is going on in Darfur.

The Whipping.

I recently read a book tilted, "That mean old yesterday".
In the book the author Stacey Patton uncovers the secrets
of her abusive childhood. Stacey Patton Connects child
abuse to the consequences in slavery. Robert Hayden's
poem "The Whipping" reminds me alot of the book. Many
of the same things are happening throughout both writings.
Many great things are happening throughout this poem. With
an awesome use of vocabulary, connection to real life,
and a strong sense of emotion I was very intrugued by
this poem.
One thing that I really thought was good about Robert
Hayden's writing is his use of vocabulary. The vocabulary
that he uses is very descriptive and the vocabulary created
a clear picture for what was going on in the poem.
While reading this poem I realized that I really love
that this poem connected to real life. He does a great thing
to draw his readers in. By creating a poem about things
that many of his readers may have went through keeps them
wanting more. If the reader has ever been beaten or taken
their life issues out on someone in a physical way than
they could relate to this poem.
Also as I continued to read I really enjoyed the strong
sense of emotion that overcame me when I got to certain parts.
When I read this poem I felt a strong sense of sorrow. Not
only did I feel for the young child who was being beat, I also
felt for the old woman. I felt the child could'nt understand
the reason he was being beaten and the older did'nt really know
why she was beating the boy.
Anyone who will read this poem will fall in love with
Robert Hayden's writing. Some people may take more or less
than others from this poem, but no matter what it is still
a poem I highly recommend.

NHD Reflection: Maya Angelou

My NHD topic this year was an individual paper on Maya Angelou.
The focus of my paper was Maya Angelous influence on minority banned books.
Maya Angelou's book "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" was banned fo sexual content, and explicit language. My paper goes into detail about the many different opinions on maya Angelou, and her work and how it help to influence other minority writers.
Some of the hardships I was faced with while typing my paper was looking for primary sources that would support the focus of my topic. It was easy to find Poems,interviews, and books by Maya Angelou, but It wasn't easy to find primary sourecs on how she influenced other authors.
If I had to do anything over I think that I would remain a little more focused and get my stuff done early instead of waiting until the last minute. Also i would pick a topic that is easier to express the theme with.

Many believe that she is just a poet, but she is so much more, and has contributed to many aspects of american life. From being a writer during the Harlem renaissance, to working with different presidents. she has lives all over the world, and has overcome many obstacles in her younger days.The document I will use to conduct research for the week is her book "Why the caged bird sings"
