Would George have been as comfortable with Lennie's death if Curly had shot him?

The death of Lennie was a very shocking turn in the story "Of Mice and Men".
George had not intended for Lennie to be in the house talking to Curly's wife,
or to be in such confusion as to kill her. when George finally saw the uproar
that the guys were in when he realized that there was no way he and Lennie
could run away from this mistake. I believe that George needed to be the one
to kill Lennie out of respect for Lennie. George knew he was wrong but he
could not let Lennie die painfully, so by shooting himself Lennie still somewhat
to have a happy life with the help of George.
